Description
The Minolta Weathermatic A is a bright yellow underwater and all weather shooter from the early 1980s built for people who wanted to keep making pictures even in the rain at the beach or while snorkeling. The plastic body is chunky and purposeful and the color choice makes sense in water because you can spot it easily. It feels like a piece of retro diving gear and fits right into the design language of waterproof gadgets from the decade.
The camera uses 110 film and features a Minolta 26mm f3.5 lens with coated glass and simple scale focus markings. Controls are big and tactile so they can be operated with cold hands or underwater. Inside the viewfinder you get frame lines a focus scale and a red indicator light that warns you when the light is too low. A single AA battery runs the flash and activates the light warning but the camera remains mostly mechanical which means it can shoot even without power.
Despite the rugged look the Weathermatic A is surprisingly practical. It floats on water and is rated for a depth of up to five meters which makes it a fun companion for summer trips kayaking beach days and basic snorkeling. The clear back lets you see the film cartridge and frame position. With ASA detection between 100 and 400 it works well with currently available 110 stocks from Lomography.
This example is in good condition with clean optics tidy controls and intact seals. A great collectible for fans of the 110 format and a charming camera for casual adventure shooting. The Weathermatic A captures the optimistic outdoor spirit of the 1980s in a way few film cameras do.
